Essien injury concern

Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of Michael Essien after the Ghana midfielder sustained a knee injury.

The damage was incurred during pre-season training and the Blues are assessing his condition.Essien missed much of the 2008/2009 campaign because of a anterior cruciate ligament problem suffered while on international duty, and to lose the 28-year-old once again would be a bitter blow for player and club."Michael Essien suffered an injury to his right knee during training this week," read a statement on Chelsea's official website."He will undergo tests over the next few days to determine the extent of that injury."Until we have the full results of those tests we will not be commenting further."Essien also missed the 2010 World Cup because of a knee problem. However the Ghana international came through the 2010/11 campaign strongly, making 33 appearances in the Barclays Premier League and scoring three times. But this latest setback will be a worry for new manager Andre Villas-Boas who would be disappointed to lose the experience and tackling of one of his key men.Chelsea are preparing for their trip to the Far East to participate in the Barclays Asia Cup where they face Hong Kong champions Kitchee.Follow Chelsea in the run up to the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong this July on the official tournament pagewww.facebook.com/BarclaysAsiaTrophy.
